- Many new web masters believe that swapping links is the most important tool in web promotion. Most link swaps, however, just consist of adding another link to an already extensive list of links on a low traffic web page, and do little for your search engine ranking or your traffic development. While improving your search engine ranking is important, your link exchange strategy should also consider the direct traffic generated by a link exchange. Link exchange with a good partner, who puts your link on a high ranking, high traffic page, will not only improve your search engine ranking, it will also bring you direct targeted traffic. If your link is in a massive link directory with many similar links, you will never get any direct traffic, and neither will you get a significant boost to your page ranking. So, insist that your link is on a main page with only a few links to other web sites.
How to find link exchanges.
Looking for good web sites with the same topic, or a similar topic, as your web site is the best way to find good link exchange partners. But of course finding them this way is also a lot of work, and you will have many competitors doing the same thing. Finding a link exchange directory is an easier way to get started. But even then, you'll find that many of the sites listed in these directories have been burned many time by unscrupulous web masters, and are wary of web sites that do not have good content, and do not look experienced and reliable. Adding a link exchange page with the title "add your URL" to your web site can be an important tool in your quest for quality link swaps. Make it clear that you are not looking for any link swap and will only consider an equivalent link exchange from quality sites. Even then you will get many requests from commercial web sites that don't plan to give you good return links. Just ignore them.

Be aware of tricks, do not accept links from FFA sites and web sites with automatic link exchange scripts. Make sure your URL is visible in the return link and always check that the page with your link on it can be found in the search engines, as some web masters will have blocked the search engines from crawling their link pages. More importantly, never link to a web page that has a zero page rank. It may be just a new web site, but it could also be a banned site. And linking to a banned site is sure to get you in trouble as well.
